Mathematics Workshops
Phase I
AZ Common Core Standards - Math | 2-Day Teacher Training
A variety of sessions will be offered focusing on building awareness and knowledge of the new Arizona Common Core Standards in Mathematics:

 Participants will:
·Examine and understand the new standards and crosswalks;
·Unwrap the new standards and identify important ideas;
·Consider implications for implementation of the new standards;
 ·Dig deeper into the content of the new standards.

Workshop fee includes snacks / lunch (when applicable,) print and electronic materials, parking, and accompanying book. Participants must attend both sessions to receive professional development credit.
Phase I
AZ Common Core Standards – Mathematics Overview (6 hours)

This AZ Common Core-Mathematics workshop provides an overview to the Arizona Common Core Standards. Topics include: introduction, work with the eight mathematical practices, cognitive demand, and synopsis of the standards’ architecture and design.
PHASE II
Prerequisite: Knowledge of Phase I session topics.
Everybody’s Talking - In Mathematics! (6 hours)
Participants will learn new methods to increase the quality of the mathematical discourse (math talk) in their classroom.  Discover how traditional math problems can be revamped into open-ended, challenging problems that support the Standards of Mathematical Practices.  Questioning strategies to promote student thinking will also be examined.
PHASE II
Prerequisite: Knowledge of Phase I session topics.
Fraction Action (6 hours)
Learn new strategies and methods to help students develop deep conceptual understanding of fractions.  Participants will have hand-on experiences with number lines, pattern blocks, and Cuisenaire Rods. Fractions topics will include: conceptual understanding, vocabulary development, unit fractions, equivalent fractions, and operations with fractions.
PHASE II
Prerequisite: Knowledge of Phase I session topics.

Increasing Mathematic Rigor through Instruction Shifts (6 hours)
This session will look at Steve Leinwand's 10 instructional shifts that raise student achievement in mathematics and draw connections to the 8 mathematical practice standards of Common Core.  In thinking about implications for teaching and planning for future application, participants will look at student work, engage in mathematical thinking, and make connections to content lessons in their grade level.  Each participant will receive a copy of Leinwand’s Accessible Mathematics.
PHASE II
Prerequisite: Knowledge of Phase I session topics.

Integrating the 8 Mathematical Practices (6 hours)
This session explores the teaching and learning of math content through the lens of the Standards for Mathematical Practice for students K-12. It will deepen teachers' understanding of what the mathematical practices are through classroom lessons, and why they are important to bring to their students as they transition into and through the AZ Common Core State Standards Mathematics.
PHASE II
Prerequisite: Knowledge of Phase I session topics.

Lesson Plan Design Using the Mathematics EQuIP Rubric (6 hours)
Educators will learn how to use tools and processes to review and evaluate the quality of instructional materials (lessons and units) using EQuIP (Educators Evaluating Quality Instructional Products). Throughout the session, participants will be designing their own lessons / units using the EQuIP model.
PHASE II
Prerequisite: Knowledge of Phase I session topics.

Problem Solving at the “Core” (6 hours)
Offering rich, authentic problems to solve is a motivating and effective way to teach the Common Core content and Mathematical Practice standards to students.  Join us as we focus on the development of problem-solving strategies. Participants in this session will learn to select “good” problems, have an opportunity to solve several complex problems in various content strands, analyze their alignment to the Common Core standards, and practice making adaptations to meet the needs of their own students.
**Notice**
You must register for workshops online.  Submitting a purchase  order without registering online will not hold a spot in any of the workshops.
