Teaching Reading Effectively The SAREC (Southern Arizona Regional Education Center) course content includes current research and evidence based practices that are necessary for the development of the technical skills of reading along with academic vocabulary and deep comprehension. This professional development focuses on evidence based practices for foundational writing instruction (handwriting, spelling and sentence construction) in K-2 classrooms. This training is based on the work of numerous researchers, and the text, Best Practices in Writing Instruction, edited by Steve Graham, Charles A. MacArthur, and Jill Fitzgerald. Research, assessment of student skills, and best practice and instructional strategies for immediate use in classrooms will be included. Writing opinion as outlined in Arizona's College and Career Ready K-2 standards will be addressed, as will technology in writing instruction.

A BETTER WAY TO EVALUATE….SUPERVISE….AND SUPPORT This three day training is designed to provide participants with two consecutive days of educational leadership development that will clarify:
Purpose of evaluation for the teacher and leader
Essential skills and knowledge needed to lead instructional improvement
Specifics “look for’s” in behavior and language in all effectively taught classes
Evidence gathering that will positively impact teacher practice
Post-Observation dialoguing skills that set the teacher and leader up for successful teaching improvements moving forward
The third day of this training is conducted after leaders have applied the two days of new learning on their campus and will focus on challenges/successes experienced in addition to compliance/data dialogue training. Cognitive Coaching The Pima County School Superintendents' Offices are offering Cognitive Coaching℠ Foundations Seminar in collaboration with the AZK12 Center. This seminar is designed for principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, teacher leaders and others who strive to support and guide a higher level of practice with their colleagues. In this seminar, participants learn ways to expand and refine knowledge and skills to promote more effective teaching and learning. The focus is on strategies that enhance teachers’ intellectual growth and strengthen instructional decision-making. During the workshop the maps and tools of Cognitive Coaching℠ are demonstrated and practiced. Specifically, participants learn to: establish rapport, create trust, and conduct planning, reflecting, and problem-resolving conversations. These maps and tools develop teacher self-efficacy and cognitive autonomy, while also developing a sense of community and professional culture within a school.
